grammar_noun


 NOUN
Noun is word which used to name the things, person, place, etc.
Types of noun:
1.      Concrete and abstract noun
Concrete noun, we can experience this noun with our five senses:  see, hear, smell, taste, and touch.
For examples: Book, cupboard, ice, wind, etc.
Abstract noun, we cannot experience with our sense.
For examples: ability, belief, etc.
2.      Countable and uncountable noun
Countable noun is the noun that we can count.
For example: book, bag, tooth, etc.
To show that the things are more than one, we can add (s) in the end of word.
Book à books
But, there are some countable nouns that have irregular form.
Tooth à teeth
Foot à feet
Mouseà mice

Uncountable noun is the noun that we cannot count it.
For example: money, water, oil, knowledge, sand, sugar, powder, etc.
3.      Proper and collective noun
Proper noun is used to name person, place, month, day, etc. Proper noun is always begun with capital letter.
For examples: Susi, January, Sunday, Makassar, etc.
Collective noun is noun that has meaning collective and combination of some things or people.
For example: group, community, team, committee, etc.

Functions of noun
1.      In a phrase
Before head (adjunct)
Ex:      Book store
            Coffee shop
            Rice cooker
2.      In a sentence
a.       As Subject
Water is liquid
b.      As object of verb
She buys apples
c.       As object of preposition
I am standing beside the tree
d.      As subjective complement
We are teammate
e.       As objective complement
They crown me president
3.      Positions of noun
a.       After determiner
A student
My book
b.      After adjective
Beautiful girl
Crazy boy
c.       Before verb
I am a girl
d.      After Transitive verb
She eats banana
e.       After Linking verb
She is a doctor
f.       After preposition
Beside the building
4.      Markers of noun
a.       Article
a: noun singular begun by consonant voice
an: noun singular begun by vowel voice
the: noun plural, singular, and uncountable
b.      Quantifiers
Countable singular: one, either, neither, each, every, another
Countable plural: two (three…..), both, a few, several, other, mounts of
Countable (sing/pl): the other
Uncountable: a little, much, a deal of
Countable (pl), uncountable: a lot of, a plenty of, more, most, enough
All nouns: some/any, no, all.
c.       Demonstrative adjective
This, these, that, those
d.      Possessive:
My, your, their, our, his, her, its, Jannah’s.
